What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances the size, shape, and volume of the breasts, using implants or fat transfer to achieve a more proportionate appearance. At Rejuvenation Plastic Surgery in Vancouver, every augmentation is planned and performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Diana Forbes.

Patients choose augmentation for different reasons: to add volume, to restore fullness lost to pregnancy, weight change or age, or to correct asymmetry between the breasts. Because the reasons differ, so do the plans. Implant type, size, and placement are chosen for your anatomy at a consultation, not from a catalogue. If a different operation would serve you better, such as a breast lift or a lift with implants, that is what Dr. Forbes will tell you.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates usually recognize themselves in at least one of these. The consultation confirms the rest.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Want larger or fuller breasts
  • Want to restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight change
  • Are unhappy with the symmetry or shape of your breasts
  • Are in good physical health with realistic expectations

What augmentation can do:

  • Enhance shape and restore lost volume
  • Correct uneven breasts for a balanced look
  • Results tailored to your anatomy and goals
  • Help you feel comfortable and confident in your appearance

Three implant types. One right answer for you.

The best implant is the one that suits your tissue, your frame, and the look you want. All three are on the table at your consultation.

Saline

Filled with sterile saltwater, offering a natural look and feel with a smaller insertion incision.

Silicone

Filled with a cohesive gel for a more natural texture and appearance, the most commonly chosen option.

Gummy Bear

A highly cohesive silicone implant that retains its shape, for patients who want maximum form stability.

How the surgery works.

Four stages, each planned in advance so nothing on the day is a surprise. Recovery typically involves mild swelling and discomfort that settles within a few weeks; most patients return to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, with final results visible after a few months.

01

Anesthesia

Administered for your comfort throughout the procedure.

02

Incisions

Strategically placed in inconspicuous areas: under the breast fold, around the areola, or in the armpit.

03

Placement

Implants are positioned above or below the chest muscle, depending on your anatomy and desired result.

04

Closure

Incisions are carefully closed to minimize scarring and promote optimal healing.

Talk it through before you decide anything.

Your consultation with Dr. Forbes covers implant options, sizing, placement, recovery, and whether augmentation is the right operation for you at all. Honest answers first, decisions later.

Breast Augmentation FAQs:

The cost varies based on factors like the type of implants, surgeon’s expertise, and the complexity of the procedure. A detailed quote will be provided during your consultation.

Most patients recover within 1-2 weeks, but full healing and final results may take several months. Your surgeon will provide personalized aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

As with any surgery, risks include infection, scarring, implant rupture, or changes in sensation. However, complications are rare, and our skilled surgeons take every precaution to minimize risks and achieve optimal results.

Your surgeon will guide you during your consultation, considering factors such as your body type, aesthetic preferences, and lifestyle. Sizers or 3D imaging may be used to visualize your results.

Breastfeeding is usually possible after breast augmentation, especially when implants are placed under the muscle. However, certain incision types may increase the risk of affecting milk ducts. Discuss this with your surgeon if breastfeeding is a concern.

Breast implants are long-lasting but not lifetime devices. Most implants last 10-15 years or more, but replacement may be needed if complications like rupture or capsular contracture occur, or if you want to change size or type.
